From St Gregory's to Formula 1: Alumni returns to inspire the next generation
Celebrating Success - 21st March 2025

At St Gregory's Catholic College, we're proud to connect our students with inspiring role models who showcase where their education can lead them. Recently, our Sixth Form students had the privilege of welcoming back Michael Prest, a former student (2003-2008) who has built an extraordinary career as Principal Engineer - Structures at Williams F1 Racing.

"Michael's presentation revealed not just engineering pathways, but the amazing array of opportunities available in Formula 1 – from component and material design to accountancy, marketing and logistics."

Michael's visit offered our A Level STEM students a rare glimpse into the world of Formula 1 engineering. He shared his educational journey and how it propelled him to work with prestigious teams including Red Bull Racing and Aston Martin before taking on his current role at Williams.

The highlight of the session came when Michael brought actual F1 car components to demonstrate the precision engineering that gives teams competitive advantages. Students were fascinated to learn how engineers meticulously seek the smallest margins in design to make cars lighter, more aerodynamic and stronger, while ensuring the highest safety standards for drivers, marshals, and spectators.

"We want our students to see the direct connection between their studies and exciting career possibilities," explains Mr Dorney Head of Science, who organised the event. "Michael's presentation revealed not just engineering pathways, but the amazing array of opportunities available in Formula 1 – from component and material design to accountancy, marketing and logistics."

This type of industry connection is central to our Sixth Form experience at St Gregory's. We regularly invite professionals and partner with universities to provide our students with authentic insights into diverse career paths. By connecting classroom learning with real-world applications, we help our students envision and prepare for their futures.

Michael's journey from St Gregory's classrooms to the cutting edge of motorsport engineering stands as an inspiring example of what our students can achieve. We're grateful for his willingness to return and share his expertise with the next generation of potential F1 engineers and professionals.
