Headteacher's Reflections - 6th December 2024

"The DfE has now published KS4 data  "

The DfE has now published KS4 data and our 2024 results really are excellent. Our Progress 8 score is 0.42 whereas in 2023 it was 0.14, which is a significant increase in value added for the 2024 cohort. Other headline figures are also impressive, including our Attainment 8 score of 51 compared to the national average of 45.9. Schools get an Attainment 8 score based on how well students have performed in up to 8 qualifications, including the core subjects and approved options. This demonstrates just how fantastic a St Gregory's education is and I wish to thank our dedicated staff again for their passion, subject expertise and great care of our students to help them attain such brilliant results. Many of these students continued their St Gregory's journey with us by taking up a place in the New Sixth and they are a wonderful year group who are working hard at the demands of A level studies and developing their leadership and interpersonal skills. A reminder that sixth form applications for our current Year 11 close today and we are delighted that so many have already chosen the New Sixth as their preferred choice.

Another highlight of the week has to be our whole school production of Oliver the musical. Our cast and crew performed absolutely brilliantly and took us on a dark tale of life in Victorian London for the poor and outcast, with some toe-tapping hits and standout performances each night. It was another incredible performing arts feat and I would like to thank the whole team, guided by Mrs Richards, for their hard work, commitment and creativity in helping our young people realise their dreams and perform with such flair. Thanks to the PTFA for their help each night and for the wonderful raffle. The draw will take place at tonight's closing performance so good luck if you have bought a ticket!

On Thursday it was wonderful seeing so many students and staff dressed festively to enjoy tucking in to a tasty Christmas lunch. I wish to thank Mrs Millard, our Catering Manager, and her team for all their hard work throughout the year, for producing high quality meals and always serving them with a smile.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our annual Carol Service at St John the Evangelist church next Tuesday 17 December where once again we join with the choir from St John's primary school for a magical evening of Christmas readings and carols. Please do join us in the parish centre from 4.45 - 5.45pm before the 6pm service for free mulled wine and mince pies and some musical entertainment from our talented musicians.

In the second week of Advent we have been reminded about how Mary said yes to God in our collective worship assemblies so I will leave you with this glorious reflection from Young Catholics: "Mary’s story is not just about her. It is about us too. It shows that saying let it be to God can bring blessings to the world, even when it’s hard. Mary’s yes brought Jesus, the Saviour, into the world. Our yes to God might not be as big, but it can still make a difference. God uses our yes to spread His love and grace to others.

So, when you think about Mary’s let it be, remember that it is more than a story. It is an invitation for you to trust God’s love and plan. Even when things are uncertain or scary, God is there, guiding you. Just like He was with Mary. God knows you, loves you, and calls you to say let it be. Will you say yes, like Mary did?"
